Franklin and Eleanor in Our Neighborhood: The Roosevelts at UVA, Monticello, and Farmington

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt visited the area during his presidency—including a stay at Farmington. The recent discovery of photographs of our 32nd president in July of 1936 at the Club—some found in the FHSF archives—has sparked new interest in this topic. Dr. Barbara A. Perry is the Gerald L. Baliles Professor in Presidential Studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, where she co-directs the Presidential Oral History Program. She has authored or edited 17 books with a major focus on Presidents and First Ladies. Her presentation will feature photographs, speeches, and newspaper columns illustrating the historic and familial ties that the President and First Lady forged in Charlottesville and its environs.
